Manga Rare vs Alternate Art vs SP vs Red Manga: One Piece TCG rarities explained for collectors
Most One Piece chase cards are versions of the same card number. What separates them is the version, and the version is written on the PSA label.
In the One Piece Card Game the printed rarity (C, UC, R, SR, SEC, L for Leader, P for Promo) tells you about the card in a deck. Collectors care about something else: the version. The same card number can come as a regular print, an alternate art, a manga rare, an SP in a later set, a promo, and more. PSA files each version as its own spec, with its own label wording.
The four chase versions at a glance
| Version | What it is | PSA variety line | How to spot it | Examples (checked listings) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alternate Art (AA, Parallel) | A foil parallel of a Leader, Rare, Super Rare or Secret Rare with a different illustration. | ALTERNATE ART | Different illustration from the base card, foil finish | OP05-119 Luffy AA · OP01-120 Shanks AA |
| Manga Rare (Comic Parallel) | A parallel with manga-panel artwork. | MANGA ALTERNATE ART | Manga-panel background; PSA variety says MANGA | OP01-120 Shanks · OP05-119 Luffy · OP09-119 Luffy |
| SP (Special card) | An older card reprinted in a special frame inside a newer set. PSA keeps the original card number under the new set's name. | SPECIAL ALTERNATE ART | Older card number under a newer set's PSA set line | OP09-119 Luffy SP in OP13 |
| Red Manga (Red Super Alt Art) | Red-foil Super Alt Art versions of a few OP-13 cards, filed separately from the regular Manga. | RED MANGA ALTERNATE ART | Red foil; OP-13 only; PSA variety says RED MANGA | OP13-118 Luffy Red · non-red OP13-118 Manga |
Alternate Art (AA)
Alternate arts are the "parallel" foils with a different illustration from the base card. On a PSA label the variety reads ALTERNATE ART.
Manga Rare
Manga rares (Bandai's "comic parallel") put the character on manga-panel artwork. OP05 Gear 5 Luffy is a good example: the Manga and the Alternate Art are separate PSA specs. On a PSA label the Manga's variety reads MANGA ALTERNATE ART; the Alternate Art's reads ALTERNATE ART. Watch for reprints: PRB01 reprinted some manga rares under its own set line. See the OP05-119 label guide.
SP (Special card)
An SP brings an older card back in a later set with a special frame. The tricky part: PSA keeps the original number but uses the new set's name. OP09-119 Luffy's SP from OP-13 shows an OP13 set line, #119 and the variety SPECIAL ALTERNATE ART. Search only "OP09-119" and you will miss it; search "OP13 #119" and you might think it is an OP-13 card. Listings: OP13 SP · OP09 Manga of the same card.
Anniversary SPs are their own family. OP05-119 Luffy's 3rd Anniversary SP from OP-11 comes in Gold and Silver, labelled "3RD ANNIVERSARY-GOLD" and "-SILVER". They are separate specs (Gold listings).
Red Manga (Red Super Alt Art)
OP-13, Carrying On His Will, was the third-anniversary set. It added red-foil "Red Super" alt arts of a few cards, which collectors call Red Manga. PSA files the spec as RED MANGA ALTERNATE ART; the non-red versions of the same cards are filed under MANGA ALTERNATE ART. For OP13-118 Luffy, see the Red and the non-red Manga listings. OP-13 was reprinted in 2026; reprinted copies are filed under the same PSA specs. The OP-13 set page lists every version.
Other names you will see
- Wanted (poster): wanted-poster art inserted into a later set (ST01-012 in OP-03, OP05-119 in OP-09). PSA: "WANTED ALTERNATE ART".
- TR (Treasure Rare): textured cards in English sets OP-06 to OP-15. PSA: "TREASURE RARE".
- Serialized: numbered prize cards from events.
- Promos (P-xxx): the promo number names the card, not the version. One number like P-001 has many versions (pre-release, winner, store championship), each its own spec.
How to use this when buying
- Decide which version you want, then search with the PSA variety wording, not only the card number.
- On every listing, read the label photo: set line, variety, number, and no "JAPANESE" for an English card.
- Before you buy, check recent sold prices of the same spec yourself, for example on eBay sold listings or PriceCharting. OPChase does not estimate prices.
