OP05-119 Luffy Manga vs Alternate Art: how to tell them apart (PSA 10 label guide)
The Gear 5 Luffy from Awakening of the New Era exists in 10 English versions. Here is how to tell the Manga from the Alternate Art on the PSA label and on the card itself, and how to rule out the PRB-01 reprints.
Gear 5 Luffy, card number OP05-119, first came out in English in Awakening of the New Era (December 2023). Bandai has since printed the same card number in four more English products. PSA gives every combination of product and version its own "spec", with its own label wording. OPChase lists all 10 English versions of OP05-119.
They are separate PSA specs: the OP05 Manga Rare, the OP05 Alternate Art and the OP11 3rd Anniversary SP Gold each have their own set line and variety on the label. A listing title that just says "Gear 5 Luffy Manga PSA 10" can be any of several of these.
The labels side by side
A PSA label has four parts: year + set, name, an optional variety, and #number + grade. PSA prints only the number (#119), not "OP05-119", so the set line tells you which product the card came from.
Simplified label text based on PSA's spec names. Abbreviations on the physical slab can differ slightly; the set and the variety are what matter.

Manga vs Alternate Art: the card itself
The OP05 Manga and the OP05 Alternate Art are the same game card: same number (OP05-119), same rarity (SEC), same text and the same illustrator credit (TAPIOCA). The number alone never tells them apart. What differs is the artwork and the surface.
- Artwork style. The Manga uses manga-panel artwork, mostly black and white. The Alternate Art is a full-colour illustration. A clear photo of the front settles this in seconds.
- Surface texture. The original OP05 Manga has a textured foil: a raised surface that catches the light unevenly, best seen in a photo taken at an angle. A flat, even sheen on a "Manga" is a warning sign. It may be the PRB-01 reprint (see below) or a counterfeit. CGC's counterfeit alert on this card notes that a fake's texture was more uniform and its fine detail in Luffy's portrait and the background sketches was less defined.
Is it the PRB-01 reprint?
Premium Booster -The Best- (PRB-01, English release November 2024) reprinted OP05-119 as a base card, an Alternate Art and a Manga. Each is a separate PSA spec filed under the PRB01 set line.
- On a slab, the set line settles it: OP05 = original, PRB01 = reprint.
- Pen icon. The original OP05 prints show a small pen icon next to the illustrator name. TCGplayer notes that the PRB-01 base reprint "was reprinted from the original set with changes to the artist credit (note the lack of pen symbol next to the artist name)". Community collectors report the same for the PRB-01 Alternate Art and Manga.
- Texture. TCGplayer notes that the PRB-01 Manga "was reprinted from the original set without the original textured foil".
- Not a tell for this card: the bottom-left stamp. The faint "ONE PIECE CARD GAME" stamp near the colour symbol is on authentic original OP05-119 copies too (CGC), so it does not separate the original from the reprint.
A 5-step check before you buy
- Find the label photo. Ignore the title for now. If the listing has no clear photo of the label, ask the seller for one.
- Set line. For the original Manga it must read OP05. PRB01 means the 2024 reprint, a separate PSA spec OP09 with "WANTED" is the Wanted poster version. OP11 is the 3rd Anniversary SP.
- Variety line. "MANGA ALTERNATE ART" vs "ALTERNATE ART" is the difference between the two OP05 parallels.
- Language. A Japanese slab says "JAPANESE" in the set line (for example "ONE PIECE JAPANESE OP05-AWAKENING OF THE NEW ERA"). The Japanese Manga is a different PSA spec.
- Cert number. Look the cert up on PSA's cert verification page and check that the photo, grade and variety match the slab in the listing.
Photos to ask for
- The full front of the slab with the label readable (set line, variety line, #119, grade).
- The card at an angle under light, so the texture (or the lack of it) shows.
- A close-up of the illustrator credit at the bottom of the card (pen icon present or missing).
- The back of the slab and the cert number, to check on PSA's cert page.
If a seller can't show the label, treat the version as unknown.
Common traps
- Alternate Art sold as "Manga". The colour artwork gives it away, and the label says ALTERNATE ART without MANGA.
- "OP05 Manga" that is really PRB01. Same artwork idea, same variety wording, different set line. Always read the set line.
- Japanese copies in English searches. Titles rarely say "Japanese". The label always does.
- The Wanted poster sold as a "rare Gear 5 alt". It is a genuine card, but a different version: "WANTED ALTERNATE ART" under OP09 (checked listings).
- Gold vs Silver 3rd Anniversary. They are separate PSA specs ("-GOLD" and "-SILVER").
- 2nd Anniversary Set #119. From the Premium Bandai English Version 2nd Anniversary Set. The set line names the set, and there is also a Japanese-printed copy of the same set ("JAPANESE ENGLISH VERSION 2ND ANNIVERSARY SET").
